Dear all,
On 28th Dec 2013, at about 1120 hrs, while I was enroute to Melaka via 2nd link, car engine stalled just 3KM before Senai Utara Toll Plaza (Last toll before NS highway).
Both engine oil and engine check light came up. Towed car to JB workshop at 250 RM (Tow to Singapore 650 RM). Engine opened up, saw that the piston broke and bearing give way. Strong engine oil burnt smell. Last oil change and servicing was done at AMK autopoint just 1 month ago.
Cost of replacement of another 2nd Hand Engine: 9800 RM (inclusive all the checks of other vehicle parts). The boss tell me he can reduce the price further.
As of now, my car is "resting" at the workshop in JB. Takes 4-5 working days as told.
Feel like selling it off already.

Wah Kau! So jialat? So what's yr plan now? I feel like making good it and selling it off. Even how good the workshops can do, I have already lost confidence in the car. Before the engine broke down, it has always went for regularly servicing for every 5000 km. I seriously didnt expect this to happen. I don't really need a car now, it's my brother as he is doing sales. Selling and changing car doesnt make sense, in times of ridiculous COE prices. Repair and continue driving, i am still worried when it will die.

Sorry to hear that, piston broke could mean excessive loading or spark plug failure. What is the mileage ? Sorry to hear that, piston broke could mean excessive loading or spark plug failure. What is the mileage ? Hi bro, my car current mileage is 170,000KM. The JB workshop told me that the engine is full of sludge when they opened it up. Apparently, the previous workshop at AMK Autopoint did not do a proper job. I suspect engine was not changed at all! I told my brother about it but he brushed it off (because workshop owned by his friend). The first time i changed engine was because piston jammed. After I changed the engine for the first time, I did regular servicing and changed oil freqeuntly (every 5000KM). The JB workshop boss offered to recon the engine for me, take out the parts and replace with new ones. It will be much cheaper this way as he also don't want to bear the responsibility in case the 2nd hand engine he source for me died on me again. But needs to wait for quite a while. Waiting for parts to arrive. Car has been sitting in JB since 28/12/2013.

Sad to hear that. Take care bro. Nothing much I can do now, except to wait and be informed how much the recon engine gonna cost me. I seriously see no point in getting another 2nd hand engine which may die on me anytime. I feel the problem is not from the 2nd engine. The problem is my brother's friend workshop. They "cheated" our money. How can the driving feel the same just before my car engine died and after i changed engine? The "tak tak tak" sound when i depressed the accelerator pedal was there all along.

Just check your engine serial number, it is the same as the original one. This will proof it the SG workshop cheated. Just check your engine serial number, it is the same as the original one. This will proof it the SG workshop cheated. Hi bro, Apparently, the SG workshop say they put my old engine number onto the so called 2nd hand engine.. to avoid the LTA procedures. In this way, it is up to them to say whether got change or not. If they insisted they changed, I have no proof also. The JB workshop said the same thing. They said they will put my current engine number over to the 2nd hand engine (if replace whole engine). So i assume it is the common practice in the industry?

Hey guys,
Some updates on my car:
1. 14th Jan - collected car. Everything seems ok, engine is quiet. The workshop overhauled the engine instead of replacing a 2nd hand one. 2. 15th Jan - engine overheat. Topped up radiator water and managed to drive home. 3. 21st Jan - Engine coolant very low. Engine oil level low. Engine check light come on. Fedup. 4. 22nd Jan - Going back to JB to get it fixed. Patience running low.
Will update after i come back from JB.

As of now, I have lost confidence in JB workshops already. I thought I could save some money; end up spend more. Should have just spent more to tow the car back to Singapore. Plus this workshop is the one I always go to for servicing in the past.
Maybe basic servicing and EO change is acceptable, but jobs requiring more skill, I don't dare to let them do anymore. I will just go back get the engine problem and probaby coolant/radiator issue resolved and that's it.
Stick to singapore workshop better. Expensive lesson learnt.

Now I am thinking, should I go to Joey (Harmony Motor @ AMK Autopoint) or Cycle & Carriage (Leng Kee) to check my car? Really at a loss now.
Any useful advice?

Bro.. anyway, I went in JB to let them check already. As of now, car is resting in JB. Luckily they give warranty of 1 month. Now is only 1 week and the problems came back. So he has to fix it for free, not that I care. After everything is settled, I will steer clear of JB workshops. It's still peace of mind to do it in SG, any problems, they are just a call away and easy to attend to my case. I was really worried that the car will die on the way to JB, caught at the jam on the causeway!

Are you John ? You even change your ID, understandable, I would have used a F ID. Usually JB workshop offer 1 year warranty for repair but if you know ask about it, it become 1 month, 3months ..... Always ask warranty. Did you go to Century Auto ??..... When you get back your car this time round. Go find a piece of rather big cardboard. When you parked you car for the night or for a long time. Put the cardboard under your engine. This way you will know if there is still a leak in the engine. I think this could explain your engine failed even you have serviced your engine, 1~2 month earlier. Show the repair man the card board, if there is oil or coolant spot. I wish you a Happy and Prosperous Year of the Golden Horse !! He told me 1 month warranty. Surprisingly, he called me yesterday and told me he should be able to pass me back the car before CNY. Hopefully it doesnt screw up. He say he fix back everything for free, engine oil and stuff. Then he changed tensioner, which cause me RM300+. Thanks bro for your suggestion. I will follow your suggestion and see whether is there anymore leaks. Btw, do you have any idea why there is sound coming from the aircon when I on it? blower or compressor problem?

Do consider is getting major repairs @ JB is indeed more worth it, vs having it done in SG... Minor routine servicing maybe ok @ JB... but if major repairs are involved... do reconsider... the hassle... the effort... the confidence... ...

After all these happened, my confidence dropped. Maybe they did not do a good job, or maybe I am just unlucky. Anyway, I got my car back yesterday evening. Everything was good, but another problem surfaced: When I on the aircon, the temperature hover around 1/4 to slightly below half. After it fully warmed up, while driving, the temperature will suddenly dip until 1/4, go up and down, but never exceed 1/2. IF i off aircon, temp stays steadily at 1/2. WEIRD!!!

Century Auto is also getting more expensive these days. It could be the effect from the falling ringgit. I think the country is going to be in trouble if the world economy screw up. Reached new low last Monday 27/1 I think JB workshop is OK for "small" job. If I need major repair, I go KIA Malaysia. When there once to get my ABS light cleared, if the ABS light up, it can only be cleared by KIA GDS equipment. For RM70. As for your aircon sound, is it a Ssss sound or something else ? Sssss sound - low gas, the evaporator is leaking. Try top up gas and see if it goes away, for me, after 1 month, the sound come back again. Got the evaporator & pressure valve changed RM900. Tick, or random tick - Usually it is just rain tree leaf that got stuck in the blower blade. I just take out the filter and stick my hand into the fan blade. If possible, use your smartphone and record a short duration MP3 and upload here (< 1MB size limit). Your engine still have that tick tick sound when you press your accel ? Sound like engine knocking leh. Are you using RON95/98 ?? If no, let your fuel tank go low. Then top up S$10~20 Shell V Power and see if problem goes away. To check if it is indeed knocking. My Carens temp gauge never ever cross the half mark. Always just below. Our radiator fan has 3 mode of operation - low, mid and high. Made sure you can see these 3 mode. Open bonnet, w/o aircon the fan should spin low speed infrequently - you need a very hot day to see it spin. or standstill engine running with bonnet covered and wait for it to spin up. When the aircon is on, the fan always spin. Another thing is the coolant level. Before you use your car for the first time of the day. Check if the coolant in the radiator is fill to the brim. This is because as you mentioned previously you have both EO and coolant leak after repair. If they have touch the coolant system again, there will be air bubble. You need 2~3 cycle to clear it. Make sure the coolant is filled to the brim. Also, top up your spare coolant reservoir to exactly the MAX mark. If your coolant system is OK. It should not dip for months and years. KIA JB is actually next to Century Auto. But I was told that have since moved to another location in JB. I have already PM you a contact with KIA NAZA Malaysia. Call or email them. It is probably your clock spring resistance too high. I changed it myself before I go there. If not, it may still light up again. Another ........ RM70. You can actually stand beside your car when they do the diagnostic with the KIA GDS. Ask them to provide a list of the fault code history. And they will advice you what need to be changed. Actually, the ECU kept all the history ...... ALL. It can only be erase with KIA GDS. Brake light warning will goes off automatically when you solve the problem. I changed the speed sensors and it goes off immediate. Ask the tech, which sensor(s) need to change. Change yourself - USD30 - KORPAS , buy in Singapore S$90, buy in C&C S$160?? + Labour charge.
