GPS devices from HP and Eastgear are worth to check out. Also, handphone GPS sucks at working things out fast and needs to pay a fee.

I've used Garmin in US and very accurate and at time it'll bring you to your destination using a longer route...untimately you'll still be there only matter of time. 1 thing i don't like about using Garmin is that i cannot avoid the route which i do not want to use...Not sure about the latest software.
I'm using a HP6515 for many years. Mapking software is more user friendly.
Using GPS in a builtup area eg CBD, the signal from sat will be block and cannot pin point on you location is the limitation of GPS.
GPS in Malaysia is ok when you're travelling on the NS HW and the major roads eg Perak.smaller road will not be shown on the malaysia map cos it changes very often... Maps specially for Malaysia eg KL will be more accurate as it's more focus on an area.
Integrate handphone with GPS is not so good as there'll be limitation on the memory size. If the map is very big in size, integrated phone with GPS function will have some trouble with it.
Dedicated GPS module will be better if your're travelling up north...
Good luck

mapking is still the best as the maps are provided by singapore land authority.

I just went Malaysia 2 weeks ago using Mapking, pretty accurate and sometimes, it even show me small kampong road that I have never dare using before this, ...that save me quite a lot of time. In NS highway or KL City it will be a bit confusing as it always wanted to exit the highway(prob the setting of shortest path vs recommended path), I am not sure why, so basic direction you must know if not you will have more headache
