Been driving picanto since Aug '07. Skidded 5 times, all occasions are raining. Average kind of rain.
I have habit of late breaking, guess that's the problem.
Besides that, any things I can do to my picanto to improve breaking?
Last servicing on 4th Jan, 30,000KM. Service guy says my break pad still thick, no need to change. Didn't see him check brake fluid, is brake fluid something that needs to be changed once in a while or last a lifetime?

Skidding is never caused by brakes, only caused by tyres. You skid when the brakes is able to stop the tyres but the tyre is not able to stop the car. If your tyres are wearing out, then it's time to change tyres.

There are no tyres in this world that will not skid... even those used in F1 will skid on that rough-treated road. Just dun do hard braking, drive slow and dun follow too close will do...

bro you might wanna try tires that perform better on the wet?
i know myself and i drive extra safe when it's wet.. but on dry different story la..can play corners a bit.. =)
maybe can try tires like eagle f1? deep grooves that evacuate water efficiently.. but it'll be noisy..

Better change some good grip tyres if you are using stock. Get some feedbacks from all bros and sis here on recommended tyres to change. For me, I would recommend you Falken 512 or 912, both are very good grip tyres, wet or dry.

tires are the most important part of our rides... look for the tire compound, the threadings...

So what i do rite now, is try to mantain a safe distance and engage more engine brake more often, I driving manual, so i downshift accordingly and it'll helps in the braking. If driving auto, the opnly way is jus to keep a saft distance, because even if can hard braking, the cars behind may not have time to adjust. Jus my comment. Cheers.. =)

Auto hv engine brake too, if u may relise. Just need to realise your accelerator n step a bit on e brake, u will notice your car slow down quite fast, due to e engine brake. I tried on my camp's 5 Tonner, but dunno auto Pica same or not, maybe someone may try n feedback.

got but a lot less than manual i guess.. also for manual, dpeends on what gear you engage right? 4th gear not so much, third gear more and second gear will rev your engine to very high and 1st gear spoil gear box and overrev engine.. LOL..
but i agree, in emergencies, i use engine brake coupled with hard braking, it's harder to skid.. and try to employ your own abs if you feel it skid, release a bit then brake again..

Use at most 3rd gear for engine brake, 2nd gear n below will spoil transmission.

the stock tyre is from HANKOOK. HANKOOK is a well establised company, so the stock tyres cannot be that bad.

Yours should be Yokohama Eco drive - it's a budget, ok ok tires for everyday driving. However, it's the tire width that can matter during wet conditions. I'm currently using Falken 512, intending to change to 912 in time to come. For picanto, 185 tire width would be good. My 2.5 cents worth
