My V2 1.6 manual is due for 50k servicing soon. Engine has been drinking 5w40 since the start. I'm considering 5w30 as I heard it is not as 'heavy' and might help the pickup. Both oils are acceptable according to the car manual. Would be great if fellow drivers could share their views on which one is better. Thanks in advance.

My milage is 69k now, using 5w30 at the moment. Next servicing might stick to 5w30 since manual stated this is one of the spec of EO.

My car mileage 70k km. Running on 5W40 and 5W30 before. 5W30 gives me better response as it is thinner. But in long run wear and tear in engine will be faster. 5W40 gives me better protection on the engine. Response wise not as good as 5W30. I now sticking with 5W40 oil.

I still use bk Amsoil signature series 0W30. Still the best oil for me as for both performance & FC. My mileage already 100k liao, still running strong. Only some of the wear & tear part seems to give way liao....

How would that wear and tear in the long run?
From my V1 owner manual, and I quote "For better fuel economy, it is recommended to use the engine oil of a viscosity grade SAE 5W-20, 5W-30. However, the engine is not available in your country, select the proper engine oil using the engine viscosity chart".
Surely KIA wouldn't mention 5W-20, 5W-30 if it causes premature wear? High wear rate occurs at startup, oil when cold (non optimal temp) needs effort to get around. Lighter weight oil gets around much quicker, thus gets to moving parts with lesser effort, and lubricating parts earlier. With our kind of stop-go traffic, having no chance to drive at constant high engine speed (unless 1st gear everywhere), it probably really is ok to use 30 or 20 weight oil. An oil analysis would be the best way in determining what's best.
I have 5W-20 for about 1K now (had 30 and 40 before), engine is almost 90K old. Checking oil level weekly, watching for signs of consumption. It is my choice, based on my research, and I really do think its safe to use.

No la.......my carens change to 5W30 at 63kkm in Mar11, know 8kkm.....no drop in oil level at all !!! FC slightly better.....maybe about 20~30km per tank..... According to my mechanic.......use thicker EO only when current grade oil consumption is high. I plan to service again at 78kkm or 15kkm interval...... stick with 40. your mileage has just reached the mark to change from 30 to 40 IMHO....

amsoil sso really is poisonous. still free revving esp after i down my rims....... now its totally fun to drive.....if i time the revvs well i can easily get over the dead torque spots and just shift easily. but FC problem so gotta try back ASL 5w30 next change see if it improve...if it does means my right foot too naughty but the sparks, EO and CAI i use gives reasonably good FC at high rpm, say constantly over 3krpm. my previous Bosch IR Platinum which were different heat range did better at pussy revvs. the first half tank i'll drive like totally NOT me, get disappointed by the results then the next half i'll be back to ME and the tank turns out alright
