Arrived at Tuas Checkpoint just after 7:30am, cleared our side fairly quickly. Stucked for over an hour at the other side.
1st pit stop @ Machap, quite a popular place, base on the crowded carpark. After breakfast, continue drive before arriving @ Sungai Buloh R&R.
Kajang satay, A&W, BK, KFC, Kopitiam.....and the ever present nasi lemak, take your pick for lunch.
After an hour's stopover, continue heading towards Penang. The heavy downpour after Ipoh was an experience on the E1.
The sky cleared and soon Butterworth was in sight. Followed the signage to the Ferry Terminal for the short ferry ride across into Penang. It's was still daylight and the watch showed 6:30pm as the sun was getting lower over the horizon.
The ferry staff's efficiency and the whole crossing was very organised. Kudos to them.
Total distance drove: just under 700km. Tolls paid: about RM100 Ferry fare: RM7.70
Now about our ride, it can hold its own on the E1....have to say many gawk at the car while in Penang......

Hi Ceratopia... After reading ur post, I went on a trip up north too... But instead of going all the way at one go, I went to KL for a night then to Penang for a night next and back to Malacca on the 3rd night... To drive all the way from SG to Penang is sure a feat! But I went by the bridge (following my GPS) cuz I wasn't sure of the way to the ferry terminal... Where is the ferry terminal at? Our ride sure can grab some attention on the N-S... I took on quite a few loud Malaysian protons and perdanas on the way... lol... Wonder what was ur top speed on the NS?? Mine was 177km/h.. Wonder if theres a speed cut on our rides...

Hi viviann, it was an enjoyable drive, wasn't it?
The needle nearly touched 180 and only for a few seconds...can't remember exactly where on the NSH but easily did 140-150 while maintaining stability. Our ride sure can hold its own!
Butterworth Ferry Terminal is a further 10 mins drive from the T junction where the left turn leads to Penang Bridge. Turn right instead to continue on E1 for about 1.2km before turning left into Butterworth Outer Ring Road (Lebuhraya Lingkaran Luar Butterworth), follow the signage to the Ferry Terminal. Drove via the Penang Bridge (without any charges) when headed out of Penang.
Both directions on the NSH, did not encounter "extra tolls", so must consider lucky.
Though the drive up was directly from SG to Penang, on the return, had a 2N stopover in KL.
Cheers! & Happy New Year!

is driving to penang and to genting about the same route up till KL? Any popular and safe toll/R&R to recomend? driving up to Genting for the first time..this sunday Hi seldon, the drive from Tuas to Genting is about 380km. Depending on the time you leave Tuas Checkpoint, Machap (local fare, kopitiam, baskin robbins, etc) and Ayer Keroh R&R (Overhead Bridge Restaurants - A&W, KFC, Kopitiam, BurgerKing, local fare.) are good places for breakfast and lunch. Directions from 2nd link : Machap R&R - about 85km from Malaysian Customs Ayer Keroh R&R - about 220km from Tuas ( or 15km after Ayer Keroh Exit into Melaka) Along the way, there are other pit stops for short breaks.
