This is an DIY process which is a step by step process on how to remove rust located at your exhaust muffler.
When I bought the car at 2nd hand, its existing muffler was badly corroded so therefore replaced the whole thing with a good condition one. In less than 4 months, the corrosion comes back again.
This is a common symptom for OPC owners who do mostly short drive. I have done it and would like to share with the brothers here if you wish to do it.
Maintaining it only cost me abt $25~ and 120 minutes. Changing to a new muffler if its badly corroded with rust will cost a couple of hundreds and also subject to availability. This is also to pass the periodic STA inspection with ease.
Step 1.
Buy a hi temp spray paint (silver or black) and Pye rust converter. The pye rust converter basically stablise the rust and convert the rust into black articles. It also act as an primer before your paint coat.
Step 2.
Setting up your workplace. Please find a empty corner in a car park for safety reasons. Spread newspaper and cover your tyres to prevent spray paint onto your rims.
Step 3.
Go under the car and use a sandpaper to sand off the rusted spots. Just do a simple sand off will do. Basically is to remove large pieces of rust that is peeling off.
Step 4.
Squeeze the Pye rust converter white cream into a tupperware. Use brush to paint the whole muffler evenly and apply more on rusted areas. Wait for approximately 30 minutes for the cream to dry up. The white cream will start to disappear and the rusted spots will become blackish.
This is how the rust have stablised looks like.
Step 5
Prepare to spray. Apply a thin coat first. wait for approx 15 -30 mins to dry up before applying the 2nd coat. Spray lots of paint into a tupperware and use brush to paint those areas where spray paint cant reach.
This is how a nice and clean muffler looks like.
