Hi guys,
Created this thread to let everyone discuss about the available performance mods that we can find for our ride.
Personally when I bought this car, it is not very powerful. I often get beamed by others even when i'm on the most left lane. So decided to spend that extra thousand dollars on performance.
Reason to go N/A instead of Turbo[/u]
- Half the price of turbo, half the maintainance of turbo
- half the bhp / torque of turbo, not that scary...
1. Violence VSD III Spark optimizer
Place I did: Vim Auto
What it does: steps up the voltage sent to your spark plugs, making them work more efficiently.
Physics behind it: I dunno...
What I feel: ride becomes more responsive when I step on accelerator. Smoother ride. Minimum effect on horsepower/torque.
2. Cold Air Intake (CAI)
Place i did: Vim Auto
What it does: Draws a lump of cold (dense) air into your engine throttle body, allowing effective combustion.
Physics behind it: It does not draw the lump of air for goodness sake. The amount that the throttle draws is only that much. Using a 3" hole does not give u larger volume when your intake hole is only 2". U shd get what i mean when i say this right? But the compressed air definitely works. ur car becomes more responsive, and sudden brakes and accelerations are not that sluggish anymore. perhaps due to the colder air. However, it does not work in long period of time due to convection, conduction and radiation over prolonged rides. People who study Physics should know this theory.
What I feel: psychologically better. Really. smoothness of ride, power of ride, still depends on ur right foot even with CAI fixed on. Don't even think of shielding the heat off, those things only slows down the heat transfer. If u want to do, spend a few bucks getting a good pipe and try. No use spending hundred over bucks on a pipe and a few pieces of foam shield.
3. Hurricane Air Filter
Place I did: Vim Auto
What it does: draw air?
physics behind it: draw air?
What I feel: it draws air? can clean? s for power, performance, i really dunno.... ppl do, i also do... monkey see monkey do...
4. Air Charger
Place I did: Nightz Concepts
What it does: sucks a surge of air before your air intake gives the supply of air. Basically makes your engine throttle breathe totally.
Physics behind it: When more air is being sucked into the throttle, more combustion takes place. You get better efficiency, better fuel consumption, and better power at low end, quieter ride at high speed.
What I feel: totally awesome. after i put in, i dun wanna take it out. my FC improved, and my ride became more powerful.
5. Violence grounding
Where I did: Nightz Concepts
What it does: grounds every individual part of your car's engine bay components to the negative end of the battery directly.
Physics behind it: grounding is just like using a lower resistance wire to conduct your current back to the negative end to the battery. No loss of electrical efficiency.
what i feel: i did this together with the air charger. My feeling is more smooth... more responsive. better air con cooling rate.
6. ECU Quick Flash
Where I did: Harmony Motors
What it does: remaps your ECU program, tweaking of ur forward ignition timing, tuning of fuel injection at different rpm, torque tuning, etc etc.
Physics behind it no physics involved. programming and tuning works which are too complicated for me to google about...
What I feel: first 2 days suck. After talking to devilcup, i realized i have to rev to more than 2.5k rpm to see the effect. So I revved it up and found out that the car has really improved tremendously after the tuning. highly recommended if anyone is selling their QF. This awesome ting is wooot!!!
7. Aftermarket exhaust
Where I did: Fong Kim
What it does: allows better flow of used air (exhaust)
Physics behind it: our extractor has a catalytic convertor in it. This thing 'chokes up' the exhaust gas when it is being ejected from the car. When there is a turbulance of air within the car, the air cannot properly exit, causing a jam in the intake and burning. So you cannot feel the exact performance of your car. by taking it out you call it "de-cat". It is illegal and not LTA friendly. Exhaust becomes smelly, and your ride becomes totally powerful. Aftermarket muffler (original) can be operated to make it flow more smoothly. So ur exhaust system is cleared. So your ride becomes stronger.
What I feel: Not a wise choice if you are going for silent rides. Not a wise choice if you are staying legal on the road. Not a wise choice when you want to save money on your car prior to inspection + road tax + insurance... cos dekitting and mounting it back is expensive. Good if you want a totally powerful ride.
Personally i feel that the extractor and ECU flash is enuff for anyone. the rest adds up a bit here and there... Now I drive a picanto with good pick up. No big deal. I still get the jams on the roads. But on the other hand, I feel shiok. because i like high torque cars.
Think twice before u do a performance mod on your car. Its never ending, its expensive, and you will still be driving a 1.1L car at the end of the day. Do it unless you tell yourself that its your hobby to mod performance on your car.
On the final note to those who wants to mod on performance, do check out the forum and google about it before you set to buy them. Know your stuff well so you won't get confused.
(P.S. some of the comments or theories are through self-process, they are not grouded on real hard facts. Choose what u want to believe. If in doubt, ask. If u think yours is the correct version, discuss it here!)
