I agree with vreffect.
My opinion is that it is an inherently reliable car because of its basic design. The onus is on us to maintain the car well, and remember what it is designed for (not for racing, tracking etc). I'm sure it will last for the remaining of the COE (if not longer, depending on whether will you be itching to change car by then).
Having said that, it does not hurt to add specific upgrade to the existing engine to make it more responsive and have better fuel consumption (lower consumption). But that's later.

This is from my personal experience, other bros can help pitch in to suggest. If you really like the car, then you would need to:
1. Check the mileage. Is it high? Servicing due? Especially if it is a major one like 60K - 70K km whereby timing belt, fan belt, water pump are about due for change. Can negotiate with dealer/seller. 2. Is the Auto Transmission Fluid of the auto-gearbox clean? If not, need to flush and change it - can negotiate with dealer/seller to do it. 3. Check state of tires. They may need to change depend on condition. 4. Battery - due to change because of age? 5. Lastly, if you really really like the car and all the above seemed good, send it for a VICOM inspection or to a car mechanic that you trust to check for any other possible problems, before you put down your hard-earned money on the car.
Its a kiasi approach but its your money here, and there are many other Picas around to choose from. Once you found a good one, I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with it. Of course, some dealers may not want to do everything but at least you can negotiate for a better deal, and know what you would need to do once you have the car.
After all these, then you can start looking at certain good "poisons" to make your ride personal and even more satisfying than stock.

I was considering the same two cars as you a year ago... in the end I got a 2006 pre-FL Picanto from SGCarmart, after 1 year+ of usage and 12,000km+, it's still serving me well! No complaints as the car is what I expected it to be.
But I went to test-drive a OPC Getz 1.4A and after checking out the extra boot + seat space and engine horsepower, I was thinking to myself it could have been worth the extra couple of K to have gotten the Getz instead.
So my advice is to if possible, go and test-drive both (I didn't test drive Getz before making up my mind) then make your decision!

Drove a Pre F/L Manual Picanto for 3years 5months. Other than routine servicing and a replacement of master brake pump($350), No problem with the car at all. IMO,Getz body is heavier than Picanto(800kg) thus consumption be higher as both Hyundai/Kia uses same engine block.

it depends on the condition of the car instead of the brand...a properly maintaind pica is definitely more reliable than an abused merc for example...

ok, im trying to get a 2005 picanto from sgcarmart, will it be a wise choice? the 2005 model will be around the 20k range. so its unlikely you will get cheated. once you chosen the car, send it to STA for evaluation. it should be graded at least a B before you buy it

picanto1.1A vs getz1.4A in term of cc is already not fair liao. if getting a pica dun expect it to have power in pickup.

if you are getting 2005 pica i would reco you save 500-1k to go for major serivcing and changes of the parts like timing belt and brake, do a auto gear fluid flush, change all the oil. this will ensure ur car is not work unstress as it may not maintain before sell to dealer.

ok, im trying to get a 2005 picanto from sgcarmart, will it be a wise choice? Hi Bro, From my personal point of view, for korean cars, they will start to have problems from the 4th year onwards. This does not apply to all but most I guess. Thats what happen to mine and my bro's (mine is pica, my bro is getz). My gearbox died on me after 4th year. I dont have extreme mods. Only grounding and strut bar. So if possible try to get a younger one. Probably 07 or so. I can say that when you view the car at the 2nd hand car shop they will definitely prepare nice nice let you see. Even if they help you to send for STA check, most of the time will be B and above. But you wont know the actual condition after a few months of driving. So better to play safe. But of course, its up to you to choose. If really have to choose, I will take getz. Sat in my bro's getz and found that its much more spacious and more stable. Though heavier on petrol, but still worth that few more k. good luck.

If you are buying AT pica, it would be wise to take note of the auto gear shift transmission during the test drive.. Look out for any strong jerk when the gear changes.. Any strange sound when the gear changes.. It is important to ensure that the gear box is in acceptable condition when buying 2nd hand..

u dun mode until car like sport car, else it can last quite long, i drove pica for 4yrs then change fl pica now for 1yr+.

As long you maintain it regularly shouldn't be a problem, me driving it for 5yrs plus so far no major issues only some wear and tear problems. Buying 2nd hand depends on your luck sometimes, I used to drive a 2nd hand civic and I'm the 7th owner then, after 2 yrs went for engine and gearbox overhaul.... damn suay...
