What: The International Coastal Cleanup
Why:
1.SUVEC’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts for 2007
2. Cleaning up our own ‘backyard’
When: 8.30am-1030am on Saturday, September 15th.
What are we cleaning:
1. Side entrance
2. Breakwater
3. Hockey Island
4. C Island
SOME BACKGROUND INFO:
The International Coastal Cleanup (http://www.oceanconservancy.org) is the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup is the largest and most successful volunteer event of its kind. Since 1986 thousands of volunteers from around the globe have cleared over 100 million pounds of trash from 170,000 miles of shorelines, rivers, lakes, and wetlands.
In Singapore: the volunteer event is co-ordinated by volunteers from the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research.
WHY SUVEC SHOULD PARTICIPATE:
To minimize the environmental impact of our operations - and that commitment begins at home, in our operations
WHAT CAN ONE DAY OF LITTER PICKING DO?
The objective of the day is not just to remove debris, but to collect data on the debris from the shorelines, waterways and beaches of the world's lakes, rivers and oceans.
Data gathered serves to educate the public on marine debris issues and to encourage positive change by submissions to governmental and international organisations that will reduce debris in waterways and enhance aquatic environments.
Along with the 77 participating countries, Singapore’s ICC group submitted country reports to the Ocean Conservancy, USA, a marine conservation group.
With international data sets stretching back 14 years, they are able to make representation to the United Nations about the global problem, and to push for laws and enforcement against dumping trash in the ocean
WHAT TO BRING? WHAT TO WEAR?
1) Wear a cap and put on some sun-block lotion.
2) Insect repellent against mosquitoes and sandflies
MY COMMENTS ON THIS:
I think we all want to be able to play in our dear TM for as long as we could. And I think it’s just right we do a small part to minimize damage to nature. I think this growing group of enthusiasts come across as socially responsible. And I’m sure you guys have noticed that the areas we go to like the Side Entrance is becoming more and more strewn with litter. We could use this exercise to clean up the Side Entrance as well.
