Hi there!
Would like to ask the more experienced Sportagers here which air filter best for our car? This is what I know of them so far:
K&N - Cleaner engine oil and throttle but diff to clean Hurricane - Easy to clean but dirtier throttle and engine Simota - Same as Hurricane but cheaper
Drop in for better pickup and low end.
Open Pod for better high end.
Correct me if Im wrong and would love to hear your expert opinions

If you are after drop in, there are only a few available, mainly the SS Mesh ones plus K&N. For myself, I'm on Hyundai/Kia paper filter @ $12.60. I change it @ 20k intervals, ie. 20k, 40, 60k, 80k, etc servicing.
If you are plan to use open pods, I do suggest you consider Apexi Power Intake, they are dry type which don't require re-oiling.

Long term, the Simota (selling at $62) is a more economical and powerful choice right? easier to clean too... K&N a bit more troublesome

My KNN used for 30K (is cleaned) and have i had it clean at Mcwell - FOC.
Currently using SS.
How interest to buy? I can less the $$ if you want.

I'm using a K&N drop-in, was on Apexi Power Intake until other drivers of the car complained of the noise.
Paper filter is still the best in terms of airflow and filtration if changed regularly, 20K is a good bet.
A K&N at at $90 is pretty expensive and with that same amount, I can buy seven paper filters which will last me 140K km. $90 does not include the cleaning kit which cost another $30+. There are tons of info on the net and its been proven that a K&N won't filter as well as paper filters, the only selling point is its durable and reusable and that appeals to the Americans as they clock really high miles.
If you look around, there are no benefits in changing drop-in filters as the bottleneck still lies with the sock intake, stay away from stainless steel filters, they are nicknamed "rock filters".
If you insist on trying an aftermarket filter, I suggest K&N or Apexi as its been time tested and proven. Simota is still a relatively new product with very little feedback on airflow + filtration.

frankly ... its a waste of $$$ ... i am using hurricane ss filter with KNN decal on my car ... and based on my buttas* dynamometer ... hp gain at 25% ... its all in the mind ... ever since i smell smoke from a stock KIA Sportage ... i decide to save $$$ for bigger project ... but then again ... saving $$$ is not easy ... i rather spend it and make myself happy ... eg. like spending on a shopping spree at Chinatown KL on fake goods ...
