I understand that our ride (at least for my Rio) does not have ABS. I wonder what does ABS really do? Is it really that important? Before ABS came into play, was there anything else that does the same function?

best is dun drive too fast so you got more react time to brake /stop or to avoid any accident...
many cars for ABS, air bag or other safety devices but when accident comes, u can see it in news almost everyday.... have or dun have, drive safely....

ABS doesn't pose danger.. but mentally who drive carelessly because his car has ABS is dangerous. ABS really helps when you stop in panic braking.. ppl tends to jamm suddently when panic, and wheels locked easily and loose grip.. then car cannot stop too quickly.. some more, since wheels are skidding, no matter how you turn steering, ur car will still go straight. ABS release some pressure when wheels starts to lock, so you still can maneuver and stop faster (than jamm brakes w/o ABS). alternative for us without ABS is, during e-brake, try to gradually press breaks till it tightens then press harder.. smooth and fast manner.. dun throw ur foot all the way to jamm. although having this in mind, i still jamm sometimes when comes to panic.. so we need to practice more.. of coz drive safely and far from front car especially raining.. safe driving..

When braking. ABS prevents the wheel from locking up. In other words, it prevents skidding and allows the driver to retain control of the car.
However, it not necessarily reduces braking distance. The only thing it really promises to do is to let you steer the car even when braking hard.
Most people don't understand this and drive less safely when driving an ABS car. There is plenty of research that suggests that accident rates for ABS equipped cars are the same as for non-ABS equipped cars due to driver complacency.
Also, when a car without ABS skids, the driver panics will quickly learn about the dangers of certain road conditions. When a car without ABS has ABS activate, the driver will not think anything serious has happen, and continue to drive ignorant about harzardous road conditions.
Spending some time in a non-ABS vehicle can make you a safer driver.
