If you are having the disc brakes, you can easily see the thickness of the pad. I think ceratos brake pads has a metal contact indicator that when your brake pads due for replacement, the metal will comes into contact with the brake disc producing a sound which indicates that you must replace your brake pads.
Usually, when you are left with <1/2 its original thickness (~3mm), it's time to replace. Recently, I replace my rear brake pads upon recommendation by C&C. Went to Ming Ghee to buy the brake pads at $50++ and $20 for installation at a AMK workshop. C&C charges $100++ for the that. Found out after replacement that my old brakes still usable for at least 6 more months to a year.... @_@

If metal touch metal, it's too late..It will eat onto the rotors and make the surface uneven..Once ueven, the brake won't perform efficiently, even with new brake pads..Tat's the reason for the screeching noise.. I learnt the hard way from my bike..Rotors totally gone..uneven and no stopping power..even after I change pads..

The metal indicator i'm referring to is a small (~1-2mm) protruding edge from the main metal body.. when the metal indicator comes in contact with the discs, the brake pads still hasn't run out yet but the sound make by the metal will warn the motorist its brake pads are soon running out and needs immediate replacement.
I'm not sure how much damage the small metal indicator will cause damage to the disc. But sure enough if the brake pads completely wears off, the brake metal comes into contact with the disc, the damage could be drastic.
In some continental cars, the brake indicator in the dashboard will light up when the metal indicator comes into contact with the disc. Not sure if it's on our cerato though...

So the indicator is metal but not the main metal body?...So, the sound is like audible warning lah.. ...I oso heard of those cars like BMW hav such onboard features.. ..dun't tink our ride got.. ...For my bike case, it's definitely the main body oready..coz at first I ignored the sound and delayed changing of pads..Then when I check my rotors, too late, become so thin and wavy..press brake hard oso cannot brake..In the end change rotors..

Mine is near 50k km. Rear pads so thin already but front still thick. If front pads, might as well go for mintex or ferodo.

Bros i intro Parut (Think that is how it is spelled). cheap and good. Same factory and quality with Mintex sold as a diff name therefore cheaper $35 per pair. Very Good breaking! Any way rule of thumb is change 2 times front 1 time back.

Yes the brand is parut. I bought it at sin ming sector b the shop selling spares beside the coffee shop and econ minimart @$35 per pair. Very nice braking power and little brake dust. I mean i change 1 time rear brake pad when i change 2 fronts.

Might be some dust embedded in the pads...
