Hi bros, I noticed that every morning when I first drive my auto HB, the gear refused to move to "final drive" but stay in gear 4 for some time. I stay near the expressway, so every morning I'll drive straight to expressway after starting my ride with a few mins of warming up... then notice it will stay at max. gear 4 (i.e: 3,000RPM at 100Km/h)... no matter how I release n step on accelarator, it will stay at gear 4 untill say 5-10mins on expressway, then move to final drive (i.e 2,500RPM at 100Km/h). It happens since 2 yrs ago (I think)... my ride is V1, 3yrs 8mths auto HB. Any bros here experiencing the same thing? Dunno is this normal?

How many gears does your auto transmission have?

I tought V1 only got 4th gear? where comes the final drive? that's what I tot, that's why I asked. Anyway, if you read the specs, there's 1 column that says final drive gear. that's a fixed gear that cannot be changed (by shifting gears). Only the gear box changes gear ratios. I was hoping someone would ask and shed light on how to change the final gear ratio to something lower (to get higher max speed and lower FC)

Sorry, my mistake... My auto ride got only 4 gears... but notice that it does goes to final gear in the morning when car first moved.... stays at 100km/h at 3000RPM.... normally should be 120km/h when reaches 3000RPM... I'm oso quite confused how many gears... specs shows 4 gears... but u ever physically counts/ feel the gear changing... seems like got 4+1 final smooth gear leh....

Me also driving auto. Yes, it does have 5 gears although manual says 4. Do any engine check light went on after tis happens. U should even check the speed sensor and the sensor's socket.
Mine used to get dirty and when change gear, wil jerk. And also wil nvr go to 3rd or 4th gear. After cleaning the sensor with contact spray and blow it dry, no prob after tat.

Hi Saniboy! May I know where is the speed sensor? Mine no engine check light... Just that car cannot go to final gear for every morning when engine first started... then after 10mins of drive... ok... rest of the day oso ok... then next morning... same thing again.... Manually feel the gear change and counted... confirm got 5 gears.... notice a slight jerk & RPM drop a bit every gear change.... so counted from car start moving... till 2000RPM at 80km/h... 4 change! Means from stop car in gear 1... till 80km/h ar 2000RPM... total 4 change... gear 1> 2> 3> 4> 5!

There r 2 speed sensors. Hard to explain where. The connector im talking about is at the auto tranny, just under ur stock air box. U cannot miss. Got one huge connector there. Should give it a check.

i think the 5th gear feeling is the engine switching over to overdrive mode on gear 4, thus the dropping in RPM.

Yes yanuk, I agree. So still got one more overdrive mode after gear 4? I notice when press O/D OFF, will drop to gear 3... according to manual O/D OFF means gear 1 to gear 3 only... so if at final gear, press O/D OFF will drop to gear 3... then disable O/D OFF will go 2 step, gear 4 then final drive.... notice the 2 steps of RPM dropping....

Hi everyone, I have read up about most car's automatic transmission and found out that the 5th gear I'm talking about is indeed call the "overdrive (O/D)". Meaning we have 4 speed automatic transmission with overdrive. The torque converter locks at overdrive to keep a lower RPM at high speed after 4th gear. So my problem is my ride doesnt goes into the overdrive mode after 4th gear when the engine is cold. Overdrive only kicks in after driving for a while when engine is at normal running temperature... Wondering is this normal? Any bros here notice this when your engine is cold? Found out that at 4th gear, 3000RPM goes to only 100-110km/h whereas if goes to overdrive, 3000RPM can go 120km/h!

Since u said the occurance is when the engine is cold.. Wld like to check whether u changed ur ATF recently? Or the speed sensor like bro Saniboy pointed out..

huh? you mean the gear for the auto car is shown for V1? The V2 does not show it. In fact, there is not even D1/D2 or overdrive. To see my gear, I need to set it to tiptronic mode. But I do notice the car stays in gear 4 most of the time, even when I slow down alot.

I notice this soon after I get my car... 3 & half yrs ago.... posted before but no one can provide answer to it.... sad to say most do not notice about it....
I think is very normal... need to let our gearbox/engine to fully warm then can kick in....
For info you dun need to try step lighter or release and step ur accerator... it will only kicks in when the "time" is up.... And if you notice, this will only happens for the 1st time of the day you drive, i.e. in the morning... will seldom come again after your work... but maybe because my work place not very near to expressway... so cant really tell...
For me it takes about cruising for 90km/hr for about 3km ....

Yes! CWES88! Your experience is exactly same as mine! Only every morning, then rest of the day OK. So I guess its really normal that OD kicks in only after engine warmed up the certain temperature. Thank you everyone!

Think it got nothing to do with the engine but to do with the gearbox warning up. Anyways, the AT is 3+1(OD) gear, therefore total is 4th gear, not 5th gear.

I think at 4th gear you are already travelling at 90km/h at 2500RPM... when overdrive kicks in... at the same speed of 90km/h, it will bring the RPM to slightly lower of 2200RPM...
